I got a letter the other day. It read ‘Speeding Fine.’ I thought, “it’s really nice of the Department of Transport to send encouraging notes. That might reduce the road toll quicker than speeding tickets.”
Comedy – yes, that was a joke, comedy is a wonderful thing. Comedy generally works on the basis of truth; revealing the ridiculous hidden truth behind things through exaggeration, so as to make a spectacle of them.
Jesus’ death on the cross was supposed to make a spectacle of Him and His sentimental teachings on love.
But as St Paul noted, Jesus’ resurrection made a spectacle of the powers and authorities that couldn’t stop Him, even as He turned His cheek to them.
Jesus is God’s grand punch-line to those who think that violence and oppression are the way to a life at the top.
