It’s a strange thing to find yourself a dispenser of wisdom on the wireless. On what authority? That I’ve got a nice voice?
Leo Tolstoy found himself among the elite of his society after one of his novels became a best-seller. He became a newspaper columnist, dispensing advice to all and sundry. He had to ask himself, ‘On what authority; fleeting fame?’
The situation was worse when he looked around at the other columnists and didn’t see lives to aspire to, but lives of hedonism and depressing self-interest.
Suicidal with hopelessness he only regained hope through faith in Christ. He now had a basis for life that transcended fleeting fame. He went on to become the most influential thinker in Russia.
Logic is good and experience worth considering, but when looking for a basis to base life on, surely we need something that transcends our little pool of mud.
