This Life: When the liars are in full-force

Text message SMS scam or phishing concept.

SAMANTHA ELLEY reflects on the pain and hurt liars can inflict in the digital age…

Northern Rivers, New South Wales, Australia

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.  “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” – Genesis 3:4-5

It seems like every day I open my emails, there is at least one or two that are spam. They range from trying to get you to pay money to them or even very maliciously, aiming for access to your computer and/or phone which is a springboard to virtually taking over your life.

“If you’ve ever been burnt by a scam and lost money, time or something more precious, you will know the pain of the lie. Something that we think is so attractive or will change our lives for the better, becomes a burden and hurtful.”

Just today I saw a post on a community Facebook page where someone had listed a very beautiful looking lounge for sale. For anyone interested in the piece of furniture, they asked for a ‘holding’ deposit. Once they had that, the buyer never heard from the seller again.

A very common scam, which people are still falling for, are the emails where someone is requesting to use your bank account so they can deposit millions of dollars. The story is usually centred on a leader of a country or businessman who is being persecuted in some form and has picked you to divest himself (or herself) of their finances.

If you’ve ever been burnt by a scam and lost money, time or something more precious, you will know the pain of the lie. Something that we think is so attractive or will change our lives for the better, becomes a burden and hurtful.

I’ve learnt that when God says ‘no’ it will always be for our best interest, just like I have had to do with my boys when they were little. However, those who want to take advantage of us are the ones who will make the situation attractive and desirable, just like the snake did with Eve when he tempted her with the fruit of knowledge. Didn’t work out so well there.

Christmas and the surrounding holiday period is a time when the liars are in full force. May yours be scam free and full of the joy and peace that comes with knowing our Saviour, who brings the truth of salvation.
