“Don’t forget to do good and to share what you have because God is pleased with these kinds of sacrifices.” – Hebrews 13:16

I truly believe, while the Earth is held together by the physical laws of gravity and physics, there are also spiritual laws which relate to how we live in this world.

I believe one of those laws revolves around the act of giving of ourselves to others. The ability to show and share love and kindness.

“From my experience as a journalist when I’ve interviewed people because of the kind actions they have done for others, there is a common denominator. They are happy. They feel fulfilled. In Christian speak, they would be ‘blessed’, but it is not just the domain of the believer that this happens.”

From my experience as a journalist when I’ve interviewed people because of the kind actions they have done for others, there is a common denominator. They are happy. They feel fulfilled. In Christian speak, they would be ‘blessed’, but it is not just the domain of the believer that this happens.

However, I do believe that’s why God tells us to share with others, as He knows the blessings that come from acting out this spiritual law.

These blessings come directly from Him being pleased with such actions.

I recently interviewed the president of a local soup kitchen (although soup is never on the menu) and she said it succinctly: “It’s my mission in life. It keeps me going. It puts feet and hands on my Christian faith.”

She went on to say that working with those society had forgotten, gave her and her volunteers a special energy as they provide a daily meal for them or find them a place to stay.

The happiness and well-being are just a side effect of what you are actually providing to people who truly need it.

We can’t all be presidents of soup kitchens, but we can keep looking out for those who are around us and take opportunities to show the love God tells us to share.

When I was editor of a local newspaper, I had a regular visitor every day. A gentleman in his sixties who had experienced an incredibly hard life. An alcoholic who had eventually had a nervous breakdown that had left him brain damaged.

And yet, he was happy. His secret was, he wanted to help people. He volunteered weekly at a food pantry for those who needed cheap supplies and he helped with morning tea at a local church for a senior citizens group. He had discovered the spiritual law that stopped him falling into depression, despite his history. He, most likely, wouldn’t call it that. He just knew when he concentrated on others, he thought less about his problems.

Do you know people who are in isolation and may need errands run for them? Is there an elderly neighbour who needs their gardens maintained? Is there a young mum who could do with a few hours away from their children while you babysit?

The opportunities to share yourself and receive a dose of happiness are endless.

There is one other very good reason to share ourselves with those around us. It pleases God. That in itself is our goal in this life.
