The World Council of Churches has unveiled a new design for its ‘Thursdays in Black’ campaign aimed at ending violence against women.
The WCC says the new purple, black and white design will give “new momentum” to the campaign, which traces its origins back to the 1980s and was inspired by groups such as the Mothers of the Disappeared who protested in Buenos Aires each Thursday over the disappearance of their children during the country’s military dictatorship.
Marianne Ejdersten, WCC director of communication, said Thursdays in Black has since grown into a people’s movement “within and beyond the churches”.
“With the new design and many options for its application, we hope that everyone can find a way to express their solidarity with women and against violence.”
The WCC said women and men from around the world have been using the hashtag #ThursdaysinBlack to share prayers, explain why they have joined the movement and publish photos to “literally lend their face to the cause”.
