Pope Francis speaks out over building of walls following visit to Morocco

Pope Francis has again spoken out against the building of walls as US President Donald Trump presses ahead with his bid to build a “wall” along the US-Mexico border.

Speaking on the papal plane following a two day visit to Morocco, the Pope reportedly said that those who prefer to build walls instead of bridges will “end up imprisoned by the walls they have built”.

It’s not the first time the Pope has addressed the issue – in 2016, he appeared to refer to President Trump when he said that a person who “only thinks about building walls…and not building bridges, is not Christian”.

Trump last week threatened to close the border between the US and Mexico if Mexico cannot stop migrants attempting to cross the border and enter the US. He also announced he was cutting aid to the Central American nations of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador from where many of the migrants are originating.

During his visit to Morocco, the Pope thanked the kingdom for its role in protecting migrants and said migrants were not marginalised but “at the centre of the church’s heart”.

On Sunday he held a Mass in a sports stadium which was attended by an estimated 10,000 people – most of them foreigners, in the capital of Rabat.

The number of Moroccan Christians is estimated to be between 2,000 to 6,000 people.

In the lead-up to the Pope’s visit, Christians there had appealed to the Pope to advocate against violations of their religious freedom.
