Pope accepts resignation of US Cardinal McCarrick

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of US Cardinal Theodore McCarrick from the College of Cardinals, the Vatican said on the weekend.

The 88-year-old former Archbishop of Washington, DC, who was removed from public ministry in June following historic allegations of sexual abuse, made the offer to resign on Friday evening.

In a statement, Pope Francis directed Cardinal McCarrick to observe “a life of prayer and penance until the accusations made against him are examined in a regular canonical trial” and imposed upon him the obligation to “remain in a house yet to be indicated to him”.
