Ten people have been killed and at least 15 more injured after a van ploughed into pedestrians at high speed in the Canadian city of Toronto on Monday afternoon.
A 25-year-old male suspect was later arrested and the van located.
The incident took place about 1.30pm on Monday afternoon when the white van mounted the sidewalk on Yonge Street. One witness described the scene as a “war zone”.
Authorities have said the event does not appear to be linked to national security but did appear to be deliberate.
Toronto Police Services Deputy Chief Peter Yuen said police had launched what he called a “complex” investigation.
“I can assure the public all our available resources have been brought in to address this tragic situation and to investigate…” he said.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted: “Our thoughts are with all those affected by the terrible incident at Yonge and Finch in Toronto. Thank you to the first responders working at the scene – we’re monitoring the situation closely.”
