The death toll from the magnitude 7.4 earthquake and tsunami on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi has topped more the 2,100 but hundreds are still missing.
Most of those who died were killed in the provincial capital of Palu, according to government officials.
An estimated 68,000 homes were damaged, making some 80,000 people homeless as a result of the disaster which struck the island on 28th September. The World Health Organization says some 87,000 people are currently living in camps.
Charlie Yaxley, a Geneva-based spokesman for the UN refugee agency UNHCR, reportedly described the impacts as “devastating”
“Our staff described the effects of the earthquake and tsunami as ‘beyond imagination’ and ‘devastating’,” he said.
“Communities have seen their houses, schools and hospitals reduced to rubble. Entire villages have been decimated.”
