A 71-year-old Australian nun has been ordered to leave The Philippines within 30 days after immigration authorities revoked her visa for joining protest rallies.
Sister Patricia Fox, co-founder and superior of the Sisters of Our Lady of Sion in the Philippines, was ordered to leave after authorities reportedly said she had engaged in activities not permitted under the conditions of her visa which granted her the right to engage in missionary activities but not in political activities.
Sr Fox, who had been arrested by the Bureau of Immigration on 16th April and detained for almost 24 hours before being released, was reported as saying she hoped the decision could be reconsidered.
“I am still hoping for a chance to explain how I see my mission as a religious sister and maybe the decision can be reconsidered,” she was reported as saying.
Sr Fox has lived in the Philippines for almost 30 years and is known for her defence of Filipino farmers and their human rights.
