Australia’s new Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said he will change laws to ensure religious freedom, in an interview with The Age newspaper.
Morrison told the newspaper that new religious freedom laws were needed to safeguard personal liberty.
“Just because things haven’t been a problem in the past doesn’t mean they won’t be problem in the future,” he was quoted as saying, adding that he will be taking a “proactive approach” to ensuring people’s religious freedom was protected.
He also said that children in public schools should be able to “do Christian plays, they should be able to talk about Easter”.
“That’s our culture, there’s nothing wrong with that.”
But he added that being a “culture warrior” was not his job.
Morrison’s comments come against the backdrop of an inquiry into the issue of religious freedom led by former attorney-general, Philip Ruddock. The inquiry was established by former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull following last year’s vote on same-sex marriage.
