Most of us champion freedom – it’s something we value above most things. But we don’t see the relationship between freedom and anxiety. Anxiety is something we all avoid!
With freedom comes responsibility – and anxiety, as Paul Clark learned when he became a camp coordinator. PICTURE: Kevin Erdvig/Unsplash
Freedom means becoming responsible. If I am free to choose my way, I am responsible for my results. And with responsibility comes anxiety.
I remember becoming a camp coordinator at the age of 22. This was great – I could run camp the way I wanted to! But when things went wrong, where did the buck stop? With me! Oh heck!
Freedom, responsibility…anxiety!
Do you see? Total freedom means there’s no rules to hold us back, and nothing to hold us up! Freedom is terrifying, or exhilarating depending on your personality!
That’s why I hold onto God. Someone to hold me up, not back, as I take responsibility.
