DAVID ADAMS looks at a website all about the history of Methodism…
Ever wondered where Methodism founder John Wesley had his famous conversion experience? Where the first Methodist building was constructed? And how the various Methodist denominations came to be united? All the answers to those questions and more are to be found on this comprehensive UK-based website – an official website of the Methodist Church’s heritage committee – which explores the history of this Christian church denomination which now numbers some 75 million people worldwide. The website contains details of some 100 historical sites associated with Methodism across the UK (and how to visit them, including a free, self-guided walking tour of “John Wesley’s London”) as well as general information on the history of the denomination (a highlight is a handy chart showing the various Methodist sub-denominations). And, along with some policies and information with regard to the preservation of official records for church purposes, there’s also information on how to research your own family history. You can sign up for a newsletter and even order a free Methodist Heritage handbook (you have to pay for postage and packaging). A one-stop shop for Methodist church history.
