Two-thirds of UK and Irish churchgoers say Bible has been vital during coronavirus pandemic

Some two-thirds of church-going Christian adults in the UK and Ireland report that the Bible has been a vital tool in helping them cope as they face challenging situations in their life during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a poll.

The poll, commissioned by Bible study app WordGo and conducted by Savanta ComRes, found that 63 per cent of people who attend church at least once a month say the Bible has been vital to them during the pandemic while a similar percentage agreed the Bible helped them feel more encouraged and motivated during the crisis.

The survey, which involved 1,095 adults across the UK and Ireland between 9th and 12th October, also shows that some 73 per cent of church-going adults say the Bible is important to them to have a personal relationship with God.

Simon Lennox, director of WordGo, said it was encouraging to hear of people being “comforted by God through the Bible in these challenging times”.

“This shows us the genuine impact of Bible engagement on our lives,” he said. “In times of great uncertainty, we need the timeless wisdom and genuine peace that only the words of God can bring. The most radical thing we can do for our mental and spiritual health during this season is to be in conversation with God, in prayer and in Scripture.”

The results come as the UK heads into a second national lockdown as the country grapples with more than 20,000 new cases of the coronavirus a day and scientists have warned a “worst-case” scenario of 80,000 dead from the pandemic could be exceeded.

WordGo is created and supported by Bible Study Fellowship.
