Red Cross launch appeal to help drought-stricken farming communities in eastern Australia

The Australian Red Cross has launched an appeal to help severely drought-affected farmers and communities in large parts of New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory.

Figures show that 99 per cent of NSW and 57 per cent of Queensland are in drought.

Judy Slatyer, CEO of the Red Cross, said it was time for “everyone to rally together and show their support for drought-affected farmers and farming communities who are doing it tough”.

“We know this is a difficult time for farmers, their families and their communities across the country and we see first-hand how hard it is for people with ongoing financial and social responsibilities,” she said.

The Commonwealth Bank has contributed $1.75 million to support the appeal.

Donations to the Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Appeal can be made at the Australian Red Cross website, by calling 1800 RED CROSS or by donating in person at Commonwealth Bank branches around the country.
