Finnish church and NGO send a message of peace to Trump and Putin

Finn Church Aid and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland joined in sending US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin a message during their meeting in the Finnish capital of Helsinki on Monday – “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God”.

The organisations hung a sign bearing the message – which comes from Matthew 5:9 – on the exterior of the FCA headquarters as the two men held their summit nearby.

Laura Arikka, a member of the ELCF board, reportedly said that “the mission of the church and Christians is to act for a better and fairer world, and to pray for the realisation of all kinds of peace as a community”.

“It is also important to pray for those who have the opportunity to influence things locally and globally.”

Jouni Hemberg, the executive director of FCA, added that peace “is the foundation on which everything else is built”.

“It is up to all of us to promote peace and justice in this world.”
