At least 29 dead after cyclone sweeps over Madagascar’s east

At least 29 people have been killed and almost 15,000 displaced from their homes after tropical cyclone Ava made landfall in Madagascar late last week.

The cyclone made landfall on the eastern part of the African island Friday morning, bringing with it heavy rain and strong winds, before moving out of the nation that night. Several people were still reported missing on Monday.

Among damaged buildings were the main hospital in the east coast port of Toamasina and some 92 schools.

Seventy-eight people were killed in a cyclone in Madagascar last year.
