The work of volunteers serving aboard the Africa Mercy, the flagship of the Christian charity Mercy Ships, will feature in an hour long episode of the show Mighty Ships which goes to air this Saturday.
The Emmy Award-winning show, produced for the Discovery Channel Canada and acquired by Australia’s Seven Network, takes a behind-the-scenes look at life on board the ship, the world’s largest charity-run hospital ship, as the more 460 people on board go about their work in West Africa. The episode, which has aired in Australia before, was filmed when the ship was docked in Lomé, Togo, in 2010.
Alan Burrell, managing director of Mercy Ships Australia, said the episode will bring back memories for the hundreds of Australians who have served as volunteers aboard a Mercy Ships vessel in the past 35 years.
Since it was founded in 1978, Mercy Ships has worked in more than 70 countries and provided services estimated at more than $1 billion, treating more than 2.5 million direct medical beneficiaries.
The Mighty Ships episode featuring the Africa Mercy airs at 6pm on 3rd December on the Seven Network’s 7TWO.
