The Australian Christian Lobby has welcomed moves by the Victorian Government to hold a Royal Commission into family violence in the state.
"We were horrified to learn last year than on average one woman is killed each week as a result of intimate partner violence," said the ACL’s Victorian director Dan Flynn, calling the statistic "utterly unacceptable in modern Australia".
He described the Royal Commission as a "vital opportunity to examine police, support and reporting systems that are currently failing our women and children".
"We’re failing families on so many fronts in our society. This is a heartening reminder that the Andrews’ Government values family and a reminder to all of the need to preserve and actively support family in our society."
Plans to hold the Royal Commission were announced late last year with some of the preliminary terms of reference released this week. The commission, which is expected to start work next month and last a year, will be chaired by Supreme Court Justice Marcia Neave.
