Walking In Truth & Love: Exploring the Letters of John

Anglican Press Australia, Sydney South, 2015

ISBN: 9781925041705

The concept of truth as an absolute has become something of a no-go zone in the modern world as we increasingly embrace the idea of many truths (whatever works best for you).

Yet the Bible says otherwise including in the three letters of John, contained in the latter part of the New Testament, where the singular truth of the Gospel message is a central subject.

It’s one of the key themes David Mulready explores in his new study guide and devotional looking at the three letters of John. Others include the (equally increasingly unpopular) issue of sin and how to deal with it, what it really means to love and how to pray.

Divided into 40 days (making it ideal to use during Lent – the purpose for which it was written – but, given its content, good to use any time of year), the book takes the reader on a complete journey through the letters of John. Each section consists of a short reading reference, a couple of pages of reflection and a brief reflection at the end.

Mulready (this is his fourth ‘Lentan study’) presents his thoughts clearly and draws on his own experience as he brings the text to life each day in a manner that doesn’t ignore the challenges implicit within the letters and, no doubt, will be sure to ruffle some feathers (but that’s the point, surely?).

While he touches on the historical background of the letters, the book is very much about what the three letters are saying to Christians today. In the light of that, it also comes with plenty of practical applications aimed at helping the reader move on in their journey with Christ, whether they are young in the faith or a grizzled veteran.

And while Mulready’s background is Anglican, this is a text which shouldn’t be out of step with Christians of all denominations.

As a bonus, the book also includes some questions for group use every few days and at the end are notes for six sermons drawn from the text, covering subjects ranging from proclaiming Christ to what sacrificial love is really all about and the meaning of ‘Christian joy’.

Good, solid Bible teaching.
