Melbourne archbishop Philip Freier has been elected primate of the Anglican Church in Australia.
Dr Freier was elected by a special synod of laymen, clergy and bishops on Saturday and takes over from Brisbane Archbishop Phillip Aspinall who steps down after nine years in the position. The position is considered to be that of "first among equals" rather than having direct authority over other bishops in the church.
Dr Freier said he believed sustaining a national presence and strengthening the church’s contribution to rural communities were among the most important challenges facing the Anglican church in Australia.
"I look forward to the opportunity of working with the church around the country," he said. "The church across its parishes, schools and service agencies make a powerful contribution to Australian society."
Raised in Brisbane and ordained a priest in 194, Dr Freier, 59, served as bishop of the Northern Territory before his election as archbishop of Melbourne in December 2006.
His married, has two children and three grandchildren.
