DAVID ADAMS writes about the odder side of life…
• A picture of an egg has become the most liked post on Instagram, amassing more than 38 million likes at last count. The egg image, which was posted on 4th January, has crushed the previous record set by a post in which celebrity Kylie Jenner announced the birth of her daughter Stormi Webster. Mystery abounds over who is behind the account which, with just one post, seems to have no other purpose than setting the record (hence the account’s name “world_record_egg” and the comment posted with it “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram…”). Stay tuned.
• Tina and Louise are reportedly living it up in a $US1,500 a month studio apartment in San Jose, California. So what? Well, Tina and Louise are cats and they live in the apartment alone. Troy Good, the man paying the rent, says the cats are his daughter’s who is away at university. With cats not permitted in his new apartment, rather than abandoning them, he decided to rent one for them until her return. The landlord, David Callisch, says he stops by the apartment each day to feed and play with the cats, photos of which are regularly sent to their owner. He told The Mercury News that the only problem with them is that they “stink up the place”. One advocate for the homeless said the situation highlights the “tremendous inequity” in Silicon Valley.
• They probably weren’t coming to help anyway. A Dutch astronaut board the International Space Station recently accidentally dialled 911 (the US emergency number) when trying to get an outside line. André Kuipers reportedly hung up as soon as he realised his mistake but the call did trigger an alert at Mission Control in Houston. When NASA security checked the room from where the call was made, Kuipers had apparently scarpered. As you would.
