Mission organisation Gospel for Asia has called for “compassionate prayer” after more than 160 people were killed in a mudslide at a jade mine in Myanmar earlier this month.
The mudslide on 2nd July in the Hpakant area of Kachin state was triggered by heavy rains in the region and buried workers and those looking for the precious stones. At least 162 people were killed and more than 50 more injured in the disaster, the latest in a series of disasters at such sites in recent years.
Dr KP Yohannan, founder of GFA, said in a statement his “heartfelt prayers are with the families of all the workers who died in this terrible disaster as well as the injured.”
“The people of Myanmar are among the most kind-hearted and loving on the planet. Right now, we can lift them up to our Lord Jesus in compassionate prayer.”
GFA reports that several Christians live at a nearby village and work at the mine site but none were reported among the missing or dead.
