ACL WELCOMES UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE COLLEGE MOVE TO BLOCK PORNOGRAPHY

17th September, 2015

The Australian Christian Lobby has welcomed a controversial decision by the University of Melbourne’s Ormond College to block pornography from its wi-fi network, describing it as a “win for the dignity and safety of young women”.

Wendy Francis, the ACL’s spokesperson for the dignity of women, says the move comes as increasing numbers of academics, ethicists, feminists, and theologians are “rejecting the idea that porn should continue to be seen as mainstream”.

She praised the college’s master, Dr Rufus Black, for calling pornography “material incompatible with our understanding of what it is to treat people with respect and dignity” and said there are ‘”clearly many in our community who recognise the damage that porn is doing to our society and doing all they can to change direction”.

The move has reportedly angered some students who have objected to the ban, who have claimed the move as censorship and argued they should be able to watch legal pornography in the privacy of their own rooms.
