OPEN BOOK – THE PRISONER’S LETTER: LIVING IN ANTICIPATION OF THE “BIG DAY”

BRUCE C WEARNE looks at the opening lines of Ephesians chapter six…

Children, obey your parents in the Lord [their Lord and yours]. Honour and respect your father and mother, that is what it says, and it is the first commandment [that comes] with a promise attached [an announcement of consequences] “that it may go well with you and you may dwell long upon the earth.”
And you fathers – do not provocatively irritate your children; instead: bring them to the way, nurture them in the discipline and admonition of the Lord. – Ephesians 6:1-4/transliteration by Bruce C Wearne

The covenant community, God’s own family, lives with eager expectation of the Day of the Lord. They are to live as the Bride of Christ, anticipating their “big day” which is also the day of culmination, the seventh day that has been anticipated from the outset, when God Almighty, creator of the heavens and the Earth, brings it all together in His day of rest.

And nested, as it were, in that eschatological vista is the children’s forward look, their rightful and promised anticipation of what the Lord God Himself is bringing into their lives.

And so there is a word here of admonition to fathers – don’t go confusing your children by an over-extension of your nurturing responsibilities. Don’t go getting in the way of the forward-looking anticipation of your sons and daughters. Help them by being a living example of one nurtured by your Father in Heaven, as one who has been nurtured and admonished by Him so that you live in the light, His light.
