Seventeen people killed in US school shooting

At least 17 people have been killed in another school shooting in the US.

The Broward Country Sheriff Scott Israel said there were 17 confirmed fatalities following a mass shooting at a school in Parkland, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale in Florida. At least 14 people were taken to nearby hospitals.

Police, who responded to reports of shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shortly before 3pm local time, said a suspect, a 19-year-old former student at the school who was expelled for disciplinary reasons, was apprehended nearby.

Sheriff Israel described the incident as “catastrophic”. “There really are no words.”

US President Donald Trump tweeted: “My prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the terrible Florida shooting. No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school.”

The mass shooting is among the worst in modern US history.
