The Christmas story told in text – Bible Society Australia launches new SMS “digital drama”

Bible Society Australia is releasing a real-time text message version of the Christmas story delivered directly to people’s mobile phones in the lead-up to Christmas.

Called Christxt, the “digital drama” is based on Biblical accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ and features messages and chat from some of the key figures in the story including the likes of Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth and the Magi ‘Jamal’.

The text campaign comes in the wake of a similar campaign last Easter which saw more than 4,200 people receive texts telling the story of Christ’s death and resurrection.

“In our bicentenary year we want to spread the Bible’s message of Christmas even further,” said John Pearson, national media and communications manager at BSA.

“Part of our mission is help people truly engage with the Bible. We see Christxt as a new and exciting way of doing this. We’re also encouraging people of all ages to share the Christmas message with others”.

The campaign – which is free to receive – kicks off this Saturday (16th December) and runs until Boxing Day when the creators promise a “very big surprise”. To receive the texts, simply text ‘HOLY’ to 0488 222 777. Standard SMS costs apply to the sign-up texts.
