Prayer leaders from Australia and New Zealand have joined in 72 hours of prayer and fasting for the US as it marks its National Day of Prayer and National Day of Repentence.
The National Day of Repentence was held on 30th April – the 224th anniversary of President George Washington’s inauguration and 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s day of ‘humiliation, prayer and fasting’ held during the American Civil War. On 2nd May, the US will mark the 62nd annual National Day of Prayer. This year’s theme for the day is ‘Pray for America’.
Dr Graham McLennan – one of the organisers of Australia’s National Day of Prayer and Fasting – says Australians were "grateful for the protection that America has given us for many years, particularly during World War II"." Now it is our turn to bless your nation through prayer and fasting according to II Chronicles 7:14 as we join together to pray for the healing of your land."
Another of the organisers, Warwick Marsh said that the move heralded "a spiritual prayer alliance with our brothers and sisters in Christ in the USA….(W)e are asking God to answer our prayers for revival and reformation in the USA and turn the tide of evil gripping our respective nations at this time."
