A Sydney church will sing all 500 songs from the New English Hymnal over three days to raise funds for a new organ.

The non-stop singing event, which members of the community are invited to join, kicks off at St John’s Anglican Church in Gordon, on the city’s north shore, on 1st September at 7pm and will finish during the church’s main srvice at 9.30am on Sunday morning.

Dr Brett McKern, director of music at St John’s, said music is an “integral” part of the church life but that the organ was now failing and needed to be replaced.

“An instrument as large and complex as a pipe organ is not cheap or easy to replace and we have already raised some funds within the parish, but for a project of this scale, we need to appeal to the broader community,” he said, “So, a community sing-a-long highlighting the beauty and diverse styles contained in the New English Hymnal was an obvious choice.”

The BIG Hymn Sing will be held at the church and a number of other locations in and around Gordon over the weekend. Locals are being invited to join in the singing of hymns or to contibute money by paying a set amount per hymn sung or a simple donation.
