A week of Easter-related re-enactments, worship services and events kicked off in Sydney on Sunday with Wesley Mission’s Palm Sunday re-enactment of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem at Sydney’s Circular Quay.
Dressed in period costume, 25-year-old drama student Brendan Paul played Jesus and was followed by hundreds of palm frond waving people praising Christ with music as he made his way through lunchtime crowds.
Rev Keith Garner, Wesley Mission superintendent, said the Palm Sunday event was a significant and important public witness to the people of Sydney.
“When Jesus entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday the whole city was in uproar and people asked, ‘Who is this?’,” he said. “The question remains vital for us today. Many people were asking the same question at Circular Quay. We thank God that we are able to witness to the truth that this was and is the Saviour of the world, who makes the broken new and offers hope to all.”
Other events hosted by Wesley Mission this week in Sydney include a procession on Good Friday which starts at 1.30pm with the trial of Jesus at Martin Place and then follows an actor playing Christ carrying the Cross as he makes his way through the city to the Wesley Centre at 220 Pitt Street.
An Easter Sunday Sunrise Service will be held inside the Sydney Opera House from 6am.
