ACL throws its support behind Toowoomba anti-porn movement

The Australian Christian Lobby has thrown its support behind a move in the Queensland city of Toowoomba to take a stand against pornography.

Last week more than 200 people including civic leaders such as Mayor Paul Antonio gathered to hear stories about the impacts of pornography and to take a pledge not to engage with it as part of a movement known as A City Free From Porn.

Wendy Francis, the organisation’s spokesperson for women and the director of the Queensland branch, said the ACL “stands and applauds the courageous move by the leaders of Toowoomba in recognising the insidious affect pornography has on the way that we view, and treat women and girls, and affect it has on our young men’s ability to be leaders themselves”.

“We pray that the rest of Australia will take note and follow this history making movement.”

Letita Shelton, chief executive officer of Toowoomba group City Women, told The Catholic Leader that the idea for the movement had come following a visit to the US where she heard about how the US military had introduced campaigns to stop the damage pornography was causing to troops.
