Christians from across the globe will join in a day of prayer for peace and reunification on the Korean Peninsula on Sunday, 9th August.
The World Council of Churches has invited its member churches to join with the National Council of Churches in Korea and the Korean Christian Federation in praying for the two Korean nations.
The annual prayer day is traditionally held on the Sunday before 15th August – a day which is celebrated as Liberation Day in both South and North Korea, marking the date in 1945 when Korea won independence from Japan. Ironically, it was also the day when the peninsula was divided into two countries.
Peter Prove, director of the WCC Commission of the Churches on International Affairs, said the division of the peninsula into two countries is "one of the great political and spiritual challenges of our time".
"The annual time of prayer, led jointly by Christians on both sides of the border, is a significant act of solidarity for all the people of North and South Korea."
