Oxfam Australia has announced it will close its eight Australian retail shops and cease online sales over a phased period from May.
Almost 100 staff – 40 permanent and 60 casual – are affected by the decision made by Oxfam Australia’s board. The decision to cease all Oxfam Australia Tradiing operations also brings to an end the wholesale business.
Tony McKimmie, chief operating officer, said the decision came amid ongoing commercial pressures and the tough retail environment.
“The closure of trading operations in no way reflects the performance of our valued staff and volunteers over more than 50 years,” he said.
“We know this will be very difficult news for our staff and volunteers – and our customers – given how highly regarded Oxfam Trading has been over many years. We sincerely thank them all for their dedication and significant contribution to our core mission of tackling poverty.”
The store closures are expected to take place between June and the end of August with a South Australian store to remain open until stock is sold.
