‘Young’ or ‘one’?

Recently Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a change to our anthem, from ‘young’ to ‘one’.

When something has been around for a while, a change can at first seem grating. ‘Why do we have to do that?’ It’s quite normal to respond to change with resistance.

But if we can let the initial feelings flow through us and pass, this change presents a great opportunity. It’s nice to be ‘young’, but it’s more important to be ‘one’.

We’ve seen recently how being divided is devastating. Not being willing to listen, understand, empathise, cooperate or concede is a recipe for disaster, especially over matters of truth.

Don’t we want to be ‘one’? Understanding Indigenous concerns and embracing a simple change isn’t that hard to do.

“Australians all let us rejoice, for we are one and free.”

Paul Clark’s musings can be heard on radio across Australia and at atthetop.org.au.
