Another huge development in our move towards western democracy was this idea of freedom. Once freedom was only the domain of the rich. The rich owned and ruled others; freedom went with position.

Christian thinkers began to think through this idea of morality: 'How can a person be guilty or good before God if they are just obeying orders; if they have no choice?'

These Christians realised that the natural state of men and women was to be free. If we are to be moral beings, we have to be free. Even if freedom meant immorality.

It was this idea that all souls could be saved - therefore all people are moral beings, therefore all people should be free - that first brought the cry of freedom to our lips.

An idea became a belief, became an attitude, became an assumption, because of Christ.
