PAPER THIN

I read Dietrich Bonheoffer’s biography while staying on a farm. In it I read about the treatment of the Jews in World War II. Later we helped round up the cows and send them to slaughter. The similarities were all too obvious. The Nazis treated people worse than cattle.

How did this happen? Could it happen again? The answer is that it could – all it takes is to jettison some beliefs that are paper-thin.

Paper-thin because that’s where we find these beliefs – written on paper in the Bible. If we take away the belief, that we are all – every human; white, brown or otherwise; male or female; able or otherwise – profoundly valuable because we are made in the image of God, it is a very small logical leap to start treating the mob like animals.

How important that paper is.
