• A European airport has taken an unusual approach to its Christmas tree this year. Vilnius Airport in Lithuania has used items confiscated by security officers during passenger screening to decorate its tree, meaning that instead of baubles and tinsel, there’s countless pairs of scissors, knives, box cutters and lighters hanging off the tree. Airport authorities hope the tree will also serve as a reminder for passengers what not to try and take on flights.
• Can’t wait to don your “ugly” Christmas sweater? For the third year in a row, Alaska Airlines has said passengers who wear them on Friday, 20th December – National Ugly Sweater Day in the US – will be offered priority boarding on all Alaska and Horizon Air flights. “We know holiday travel can be stressful for some, which is why we’ve made sure flying with the ‘merrier carrier’ this time of year is an experience that brings non-stop joy to all our guests,” said Natalie Bowman, Alaska Airlines’ managing director of marketing and advertising. A special hot toddy cocktail will also be available in Alaska lounges on the day.
• And in non-Christmas related news, the European Union has presented the African nation of Mauretania with a gift of 250 camels as part of efforts to boost board security and combat jihadists. The gift has reportedly promoted amusement – and even some anger – among locals given the number of camels already in Mauretania. Some have suggested a more high-tech gift – like advanced surveillance systems – could be more useful. Hmmm.
