• Slovenia’s former President, Borut Pahor, raised €60,000 for charities helping children diagnosed with cancer from the sale of his 1991 Renault 4 and handed over the keys to the winning bidder on Sunday. Businessman Aleksandar Fratar placed the best bid in an auction. “Our intension was to help these fighters [children],” Fratar said. Pahor, a former fashion model, served two terms as Slovenian president, a mostly ceremonial position. He ended his second five-year term last year and was succeeded by Natasa Pirc Musar, the country’s first female President.  “I knew [from the start] that this would not be a auction for people who just like good cars, but for people who have big hearts,” Pahor said. – BORUT ZIVULOVIC, Ljubljana, Slovenia/Reuters

It’s a hot competition at the European Sauna Marathon in Estonia – but it’s far from the stereotypical towel-clad Baltic pastime, this competition is carnival-costumed sauna-seeking fun. To promote sauna culture in Estonia and to entertain people in the long dark northern winters, the self-styled Estonian winter capital, Otepaa, hosted the XII European Sauna Marathon on Saturday.  The Sauna Marathon is an orienteering contest where teams of four people, mostly in costume, have to find and visit as many local saunas as possible in the fastest time possible. This year 18 saunas were on the marathon route, where people have to spend at least three minutes inside – additional points could be gained by a pit-stop in a hot tub or taking a freezing dip in an ice-hole. The competition is quite literally hot stuff, with around 800 people from around the world taking part. • An 85-year-old care home resident reached speeds of 160 kph as she zipped across the sky on what’s said to be the fastest zipline in the world. Sally Webster, a resident from Deewater Grange care home in Chester, took on the 1.5 kilometre zipline at Penrhyn Slate Quarry with her daughter, Juliet. When asked about this 150-metres-above-the-ground experience, she said it “took my breath away.” Care UK’s ‘Wishing Tree’ initiative allows residents to suggest new hobbies or activities they would like to try, and made it possible for Webster, who paraglided over Morzine in the French Alps when she was in her mid-sixties, to soar above the ground once again. Zip World Velocity 2 near Bethesda in North Wales is the fastest zipline in the world, and the longest in Europe, according to their website. Reuters TV
