In a Word: Renewed

Perry LaHaie Him

“The choice to base so much of the album on hymns allows LaHaie to explore the entire Gospel message through poetic yet doctrinally accurate lyrics. Hopefully, this fresh new presentation of classic songs will introduce a new generation of worshippers to the power of these hymns.”

Perry LaHaie has dedicated his career to reaching the lost through music, radio and the internet. The evangelist, radio host and singer/songwriter now expands his repertoire by taking inspiration from hymns of the past in his new album, Him.

This 10 tracks on the album are a combination of original songs with reimagined versions of some the world’s most iconic hymns. Featuring Amazing Grace, O For a Thousand Tongues and Rock of Ages – among others, the songs have been reimagined with new arrangements, new choruses and bridges. The fresh, new sound of these age-old melodies still manages to preserve the core of what made these hymns such classics.

The original songs introduced on the album have strong melodies that are instantly singable, making these original compositions an ideal compliment to the hymns. Acoustic guitars feature predominantly with a strong percussive backbone that provides a resounding heartbeat to the tracks. Keys and other modern electric instruments feature as the melodies swell to crescendos. LaHaie’s vocals, are a mix of sincerity and passion that maintain an intimacy while still evoking an anthemic, stadium filling sound.

The result is a collection of uplifting songs, with profound lyrics, many of which have stood the test of time. The choice to base so much of the album on hymns allows LaHaie to explore the entire Gospel message through poetic yet doctrinally accurate lyrics. Hopefully, this fresh new presentation of classic songs will introduce a new generation of worshippers to the power of these hymns.

A prime example of this is the 1835 hymn Just As I Am, which was the signature invitation to Christ song played at the Billy Graham Crusades. Here, the original verses are complimented with a powerful new chorus that even further personalises the experience. Worship teams looking for inspiration will find much potential in this and the other innovative arrangements.

Whether it be for private worship or public outreach, the songs on Him are reflective, rousing, nostalgic and fresh. The album succeeds in bringing together the present and the past with imagination, passion and power.
