At least one killed, more than 10 injured, in Nigerian church collapse

A church building in Nigeria collapsed on Sunday, killing at least one of the congregants and injuring more than 10 others, according to reports.

Reports say the St Paul Catholic Church in Adagbrasa-Ogolo, in the southern Delta state, collapsed during a time of prayer prior to a Mass. Local reports said the person killed was an 11-year-old boy and that at least four people remained in hospital after initial treatment.

Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa reportedly called the incident “sad, unfortunate and regrettable”. It has also been reported that he offered to pay for the hospital bills of the injured.

The building was reported as being 100-years-old and a preliminary government report has suggested heavy rains had weakened the walls which were then leant on by worshippers.
