Bible Gateway marks 25 years – and 14 billion views

Claimed to be the world’s most visited Christian website, Bible Gateway has been viewed more than 14 billion times by people using more than a billion devices since its creation 25 years ago, according to the company behind it.

Rachel Barach, general manager of Bible Gateway, said that to provide some perspective, “one million seconds equal 11.5 days, one billion seconds equal 31.75 years”.

“Our mission statement is ‘To honour Christ by equipping people to read and understand the Bible, wherever they are’,” she said in a statement. “What an honour and privilege to be able to serve so many people around the world during the last quarter-century, doing just that.”

Bible Gateway was created in 1993 for students at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to use as a Bible research computer. Now part of HarperCollins Christian Publishing Inc, it offers more than 200 versions of the Bible in more than 70 languages. In addition, the Bible Gateway App, which is free for both Android and iOS users, allows people to read more than 90 Bible translations and listen to more than 20 audio Bibles. There’s also a recently launched Bible Gateway Bible Audio App.

Barach says the company – which will launch a new design of the website in the next few months – is looking forward to the future.

“God has been faithful these last 25 years and we’re excited about how He will continue to use Bible Gateway to further his kingdom and help people know and share his Word,” she said.

According to Bible Gateway, the 10 most searched for keywords on the site include love, peace, faith, hope, joy, heart, prayer, wisdom, Holy Spirit and grace while the top 10 Bible verses searched for include John 3:16, Jeremich 29:11 and Philippians 4:13.

Correction: This article orginally said Bible Gateway had been viewed 14 trillion times by people using more than a trillion devices. The figures were actually 14 billion and more one billion. The error was made in information compiled by Bible Gateway.
