Adelaide’s Catholic Archbishop Philip Wilson sentenced to 12 months for concealing child abuse

Philip Wilson, Catholic Archbishop of Adelaide, is to be assessed for home detention following his conviction last month for concealing child sexual abuse.

Appearing in Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday morning, Magistrate Robert Stone sentenced Wilson to 12 months detention and adjourned the matter until 14th August to assess Wilson’s suitability for home detention. He will eligible for parole after six months.

The 67-year-old archbishop is the most senior Catholic cleric in the world to be found guilty of concealing child sexual abuse. He was convicted in May of concealing the sexual abuse of children which took place in the 1970s.

Wilson has stepped aside from his position as archbishop but has not resigned.
