World Vision Australia launches Syria appeal

World Vision Australia has launched an appeal to raise funds for the support of the thousands of Syrians who have fled to Lebanon to escape the violence in their home country.

While more than 122,000 refugees are registered as being in Lebanon, the number is believed to be higher thanks to the reluctance of some to register with the UN. Many of the Syrians are living within the Lebanese community, sleeping in not-yet-completed buildings or garages.

Anthea Spinks, head of humanitarian and emergency affairs at World Vision Australia, says the approaching northern hemisphere winter could have a devastating impact on those living without power or heating in substandard housing.

“There are parts of Lebanon that fall below freezing in winter, and there are Syrian refugees who will struggle to survive in those conditions without our help,” Ms Spinks said.

“Sadly this crisis shows no sign of ending, and as always, it”s vulnerable people such as children, pregnant women and the elderly who suffer.”

World Vision is aiming to provide food and cooking implements, hygiene kits, warm clothes and blankets to 42,500 of those Syrians living in Lebanon. They have also created “child-friendly” spaces for children to play in and access educational and other services.
