Ten dead after gunman opens fire at US school

Ten people, mostly high school students, have been killed and a similar number wounded after a gunman opened fire at a Texas school.

In the deadliest US school attack since the shootings in Florida in February in which 17 died, the gunman allegedly walked into an art class at Santa Fe High School, near Houston, and starting shooting shortly before 8am local time.

A 17-year-old pupil at the school was later arrested and charged over the incident. Along with guns, police also found explosive devices at the school.

US President Donald Trump described the attack as “absolutely horrific” and said his administration was “determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools, and to keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves, and to others”.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott called the attack “one of the most heinous” seen in the history of Texas schools.

“It’s impossible to describe the magnitude of the evil of someone who would attack innocent children in a school,” he reportedly said.
