According to the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), family members in Iran have confirmed that Mr Abedini, along with nine other prisoners, has been placed in solitary confinement amid concerns over his deteriorating health.
The ACLJ said that in addition to the severe internal bleeding caused by “months of beatings and torture” which have subsequently been untreated, Mr Abedini is now also facing issues with his kidneys.
According to the organisation, Mr Abedini was placed in solitary confinement after he and other prisoners held a protest over the lack of medical care they have received in prison and the threats and harsh treatment accorded to family members who visit.
Meanwhile, Mr Abedini’s wife, Naghmeh, recently expressed her disappointment on US TV over the way in which the US government has responded to his imprisonment, saying she expected President Barack Obama to “step it up”.
Mr Abedini, a US citizen who grew up in Iran and had visited the country several times in recent years, was sentenced to eight years in prison in January after allegations he had been involved in evangelism in Iran.
The ACLJ is urging people to write the pastor a letter of encouragement and hope, noting Mr Abedini turns 33-years-old on 7th May. Thousands of people have already have sent a birthday greeting.
The ACLJ commented, “Letters of prayer, support and encouragement. They are needed now more than ever. Please take a moment, if you haven’t done so already, and send a letter to Pastor Saeed today.”
