Australians join 40 days of prayer for a “billion souls”

The organisers of Australia’s National Day of Prayer and Fasting have called on Christians across the country to join with Christians around the world in 40 days of prayer and fasting.

Under the banner of the Billion Souls Revival Prayer Call, Christians will be fasting and praying for 40 days from 6th August through until what they are calling an “International Day of Prayer, Fasting and Repentance” on Sunday, 14th September, the day on which Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, is held.

40 DAYS OF PRAYER: The 40 days runs from 6th August to 14th September.

A four point prayer plan calls upon Christians to pray for a “worldwide outpouring of the Holy Spirit for revival and transformation of the nations of the world” and to pray for a billion people to “find Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord”.

They are also calling people to to pray for an end to abortion, for God to “turn back the tide of death and immorality that is sweeping across the nations of the world”, and to pray for a “multiplication of prayer, praise and worship to God across the world as never before, to bring great glory to God”.

The movement is support by international prayer and evangelism ministries around the world with 39 national and international Christian leaders from more than a dozen countries including Australia, US, UK, India, Argentina, South Africa, China, South Korea, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Malawi and Mozambique contributing to a 40 day devotional to be used by those praying (it can be downloaded from the website).

In a statement, Australian organisers Warwick Marsh, and David and Marilyn Rowsome said that when in the planning stages of the prayer call, the Lord led them to consider the Biblical story of Jonah and his 40 call for the people of Nineveh to repent.

“Repentance is key to the success of this Billion Souls Revival Prayer Call,” they wrote. “Repentance must always start with us. It is our conviction that we should take heart from Jonah”s success as we together intercede for the nations of the world to come back to God in a spirit of repentance. Jesus likened his own life to the story of Jonah (Matt 12:40). The good news is that the one who is greater than Jonah (Matt 12:41) is in us and He has paid the price for our sin and the sins of the world. As Jesus said: ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’ (John 3:16 NIV).”
