More than a million people expected to join in this month’s Global Hymn Sing

More than a million Christians in more than 100 countries around the world are expected to take part in the second Global Hymn Sing to raise awareness of the ongoing need for evangelism around the world.

An initiative of mission organisation OMF International, the Global Hymn Sing is expected to see people in more than 5,000 churches joining in singing the new hymn, For the Cause, on Sunday, 25th June.

The hymn has been written by world-renowned hymn writers Keith and Kristyn Getty and there is a special children’s version aimed at encouraging children to take part.

Last year, more than 1.1 million people took part in the event, singing the hymn, Facing A Task Unfinished. Reworked by the Gettys, that hymn had originally been written by China Inland Mission worker Frank Houghton in the 1920s as a call for 200 missionaries to go into the heart of China. By 1931, more than 200 had done so, resulting in what is described as the “greatest growth of Christianity in the history of the world” with between 80 and 130 million people coming to Christ.

Mr Getty said last year that it had been “an extraordinary honor to be part of reintroducing Facing a Task Unfinished to a new generation”.

But he added that the “global singing of the song…is not an end in itself.” “We pray it is a fresh catalyst, another beginning point, for renewed singing and urgent conversation and action in churches all over the world toward global missions.”

Churches are encouraged to register at www.globalhymnsing.com where resources – including lyrics and music – can be downloaded for free.
