CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF MARTIAN DISCOVERIES – WITH A SELFIE

30th January, 2014

PICTURE: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Cornell Univ./Arizona State Univ

NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover, Opportunity, landed on Mars 10 years ago this month, on 25th January, 2004.

Originally tasked with a three month mission, 10 years on the rover is still exploring the red planet 38.7 kilometres from the site where it landed.

In celebration of its anniversary, the rover sent this selfie back to earth. It was taken from 3rd to 6th January using the rover’s panoramic camera (Pancam).

The mast on which the camera is mounted cannot be seen in the picture although its shadow can.
