The Catholic Archdiocese of Mexico says that people who invest in companies involved in the building of US President Donald Trump’s wall should be considered “traitors to the homeland”.
In a statement released in the archdiocese’s weekly publication, Desde la fe, titled ‘Treason against the Homeland’, the archdiocese reportedly said: “Any company intending to invest in the wall of the fanatic Trump would be immoral, but above all, its shareholders and owners should be considered traitors to the homeland.”
It added: “In practice, signing up for a project that is a serious affront to dignity is shooting yourself in the foot.”
The statement, published on Sunday, came after Mexico’s Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo warned firms that it would not be in their interests to participate in building the wall.
A number of construction material companies in Mexico have reportedly said they would be interested in supplying materials for the project.
President Trump has repeatedly said he wished to build an “inpenetrable” wall between Mexico and the US to stop illegal immigration.
