International community not on course to end hunger by 2030, says report

The international community is not on course to end hunger by the UN Sustainable Development Goal deadline of 2030, according to the 2016 Global Hunger Index.

Produced by the International Food Policy Research Institute, the index shows that if the rate at which hunger declines remains the same as it has been since 1992, more than 45 countries – including India, Pakistan, Haiti, Yemen and Afghanistan – will still have “moderate” to “alarming” levels of hunger in the year 2030.

The report shows that at present, while for the second year in a row no country has “extremely alarming” levels of hunger, seven countries – including Haiti, the Central African Republic, Chad, and Zambia – have “alarming” levels of hunger and 43 – including India, Nigeria and Indonesia – have “serious” levels of hunger.

Progress has been made with the level of hunger in developing countries declining 29 per cent since 2000 and 20 countries, including Rwanda, Cambodia and Myanmar, having their Global Hunger Index scores reduced by half over the same period.

But Dominic MacSorley, CEO of NGO Concern Worldwide, said there remain “795 million people condemned to facing hunger every day of their lives”.

“This is not just unacceptable, it is immoral and shameful,” he said. “Resources like the Global Hunger Index provide us with a critical insight into the scale of the global hunger crisis. Agenda 2030 provides us with the ambition and commitment to reach zero hunger. We have the technology, knowledge and resources to achieve that vision. What is missing is both the urgency and the political will to turn commitments into action.”

Now in its 11th year, the Global Hunger Index ranks 118 countries in the developing world based on four key indicators: undernourishment, child mortality, child wasting and child stunting.
